How Browser Based File Conversion Works: WebAssembly, FFmpeg and Privacy

How websites can convert photos, PDFs, audio and video entirely on your device using WebAssembly, and what that means for privacy and speed.

The traditional approach: upload, convert, download

Most online converters work like a mail order service: you upload your file, a server converts it and you download the result. That requires trusting the operator with your content, waiting for uploads and downloads, and relying on the server being available.

The local approach

A browser based converter ships the conversion code to your device when the page loads. Photos can be decoded and re-encoded using the browser's built in canvas. Heavier jobs use libraries compiled to WebAssembly, a compact binary format that browsers execute safely in a sandbox. WebAssembly became a W3C Recommendation in December 2019.

FFmpeg in the browser

FFmpeg is a long established open source toolkit for audio and video, first released in 2000. Projects such as ffmpeg.wasm compile it to WebAssembly so a web page can convert MP4 to MP3, MOV to MP4 or video to GIF locally.

Trade offs

Local conversion is private and avoids upload time, but it uses your device's processor and memory. A multi gigabyte video may be impractical on a phone, and the first use of the audio and video engine requires downloading a few tens of megabytes.

How to verify a converter is local

Open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab and convert a file. If no large request leaves your device during conversion, the file is not being uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Is browser based conversion slower?

For photos and PDFs it is usually as fast or faster because there is no upload. For long videos it is slower than a powerful desktop program.

Does it work on phones?

Yes, in modern mobile browsers and in the ARTH Convert Android app, with limits on very large files.
