A Privacy Checklist for Online File Converters

Eight questions to ask before you upload a photo, PDF or video to a free converter, and how local, in-browser tools remove most of the risk.

Why it matters

Photos can contain faces and locations, PDFs often contain identity numbers and signatures, and videos may include private spaces. Uploading them to an unknown server hands a copy to someone you may know nothing about.

The checklist

1. Does the file leave your device? Local, in-browser tools do not upload.

2. If it is uploaded, how long is it stored, and is deletion automatic?

3. Is the connection encrypted (HTTPS)?

4. Do the terms grant the operator rights over your content?

5. Who runs the service, and can you contact them?

6. Does the site ask you to install software or disable security tools? Do not.

7. Are there misleading download buttons among the ads?

8. Does it add watermarks or require sign up for basic features?

How local conversion changes the picture

With local conversion the main privacy question becomes what else the page loads. A site can still run analytics or show advertising, but those scripts do not receive the files you convert.

What ARTH Convert does

ARTH Convert converts images, PDFs, audio and video on your own device. Files are not uploaded. The site displays advertising, including its own studio's advertisements, and counts visits as a single anonymous number.

Frequently asked questions

Can a local converter still be unsafe?

Any website can include third party scripts, so choose sites you trust and avoid prompts to install software.

Should I convert ID documents online?

Only with a tool that processes them locally. If in doubt, use software installed on your own computer.
