Video Container Formats Explained: MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM and GIF
The difference between a video container and a codec, and how MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM and GIF compare in compatibility and use.
Container versus codec
People often say a video is an MP4, but MP4 only describes the container. Inside are separate streams, typically compressed with a video codec such as H.264 and an audio codec such as AAC. Two MP4 files can therefore behave very differently if they use different codecs.
| Container | Created by | Common codecs | Strength |
|---|---|---|---|
| MP4 | ISO/IEC 14496-14 (MPEG-4) | H.264, H.265, AAC | Best compatibility |
| MOV | Apple QuickTime | H.264, HEVC, ProRes | Apple devices and editing |
| MKV | Matroska project (2002) | Almost any | Flexible, many tracks |
| WebM | Google (2010) | VP8, VP9, AV1, Vorbis, Opus | Open web video |
| GIF | CompuServe (1987) | None (image frames) | Plays without a player |
MP4
MP4 is based on Apple's QuickTime file format and was standardised as part of MPEG-4. Paired with H.264 (also known as AVC, ITU-T H.264 and ISO/IEC 14496-10), it plays on virtually every phone, browser, television and editing tool.
MOV
MOV is the QuickTime container Apple introduced in 1991. iPhones record to MOV by default. It is structurally close to MP4, but some Windows players and websites handle it poorly, which is why converting MOV to MP4 is common.
MKV and WebM
MKV, from the Matroska project, can hold any number of video, audio and subtitle tracks and is popular for archived films. WebM, announced by Google in 2010, is a restricted subset of Matroska designed for open web video.
GIF
GIF is an image format that stores animation as a series of 256 colour frames. It is far less efficient than video, so modern sites usually replace animated GIFs with short MP4 or WebM loops.
Frequently asked questions
Does converting MOV to MP4 lose quality?
If the video is re-encoded with a high quality setting, any loss is rarely visible. Re-encoding always involves some loss, so keep the original if you need an archive.
What is the best format for uploading to social media?
MP4 with H.264 video and AAC audio is accepted by essentially every platform.
