What is the best image format for websites?
For most websites the best image formats are WebP or AVIF for photos, because they are smaller than JPG at similar quality, with JPG as a safe fallback. Use PNG or SVG for logos, icons and graphics with sharp edges or transparency, and avoid GIF for animation when MP4 or WebM is possible.
Smaller images load faster, which improves user experience and can help search performance. WebP, introduced by Google in 2010, is supported by all current major browsers. AVIF, based on the AV1 video codec, often compresses even better but is slower to encode.
JPG remains the universal fallback for photographs. PNG is lossless and good for screenshots and graphics. SVG is ideal for logos and icons because it scales without losing sharpness.
Whatever you choose, resize images to the size they are shown at and compress them before uploading.

Should I use HEIC on a website?
No. Browsers other than Safari do not display HEIC, so convert to JPG or WebP first.
Is WebP supported everywhere?
All current major browsers support it, but some older apps and editors do not, which is when a JPG conversion helps.
